To prevent:
- Remove tourniquet before removing needle
- Personal tourniquets attached to your scrubs button are very hard to retain, but some discourage it for hygiene reasons
There have been incidents in the past where during blood taking the HO realised he forgot to take e.g. blood tubes, and went back to treatment room and sprinted back immediately. The HO did not forget the tourniquet and immediately attended the patient, but nurses noticed it and launched a complain against the HO, and was brought to the level of the intern coordinator thus blemishing the HO’s records. The lesson is therefore not just the proper handling of tourniquet, but you must not entertain anyone’s imagination.
